1. Avoid intoxicants (alcohol & drugs)

Mind and body influence each other. Both must be completely detoxified. A healthy will can only exist in a healthy organism. Alcohol and drugs must be avoided from day one. [ If you are an alcoholic, temper your consumption. However, within two to three weeks you must abstain entirely. ]

(This includes caffeine, nicotine, and other drugs.)

2. Avoid sexual release

At this time you require all of your energy (prana) for higher purposes. Avoid sexual material and conversation. Train your mind to abstain from all sexual thoughts, as they weaken you just as much as actual sex, and for some people, even more so. Thus the prana generated in the reproductive organs, instead of being wasted, rises and naturally rejuvenates the brain and the higher organs.

Seven-Point Posture

This is the basic posture to take when performing meditation exercises. It positions the channels of the body so that all  its energies are naturally balanced and flowing. When prāna is able to flow freely, the mind naturally assumes a state of balance and relaxation. Thus correct posture is extremely important for attaining success in your meditation practice.

1

Legs

Sit cross-legged on the floor, ideally in full or half lotus.

2

Eyes

Your eyes should not be open, nor too tightly closed. Relax your eyelids, thus closing them without strain.

3

Spine

Keep your spine and neck straight, like a stack of coins. Your head should not be tilted back or forward, or to either side. A guide: your nose should be inline with your navel.

4

Hands

Clasp the hands, right over left, placing them in the lap.

5

Shoulders

Keep the arms straight and lift and rest the shoulders evenly, spread like an eagle's wings.

6

Mouth

The teeth and lips should rest in their natural state, the tongue should rest behind the lower teeth. Leave the mouth slightly open, the teeth should not touch.

7

Breath

Inhalation and exhalation through the nose. Your breath should be barely discernable, gentle, soft and natural, without undue noise or effort.

Note: If for any reason it is not comfortable or advisable to sit on the floor, then the rest of the six points may be practiced sitting in a comfortable chair with the feet planted slightly apart on the floor.
